Ambassador and Mrs. Emerson Host Film Screening of “Mission Blue” on the Eve of “Our Oceans Conference”

On June 15, Ambassador and Mrs. Emerson hosted a screening of the film “Mission Blue” and moderated a follow-on discussion with marine scientist Jeffrey Watters of the non-government organization, Ocean Conservancy. The event brought together members of the environmental community, academics, scientists, and Ambassadors and officials from over a dozen countries, to discuss the significant challenges the ocean is facing, including unsustainable fishing practices, marine pollution, and ocean acidification. “Mission Blue” is an environmental documentary, featured during the 2014 Berlinale, on the legendary oceanography, author, and National Geographic Explorer, Dr. Sylvia A. Earle, and her campaign to create a global network of protected marine sanctuaries. The event coincided with the “Our Oceans Conference” hosted by Secretary of State John Kerry in taking place in Washington, D.C., thereby making ocean conservation a US foreign policy priority.
