Ambassador John B. Emerson, and Kimberly Marteau Emerson visit Wattenmeer July 21st to learn about environmental protection efforts and challenges at Nationalpark Schleswig-Holsteinisches Wattenmeer. Kirsten Thiemann, station commissioner at Schutzstation Wattenmeer, explains how plastic bottles or old fishing nets pose a threat to marine life. Pollution is an acute threat to many aquatic species, damaging their habitats, disrupting their food chains, and even strangling or choking the animals in the case of plastic waste. Secretary of State John Kerry will host the Our Ocean Conference in Washington D.C. September 15th – 16th to discuss threats to marine environments as well as efforts to address these threats, including; marine protected areas, sustainable fisheries, marine pollution, and climate-related impacts on the ocean. The conference will be attended by experts from around the globe.
