Event: Update to COVID-Related Restrictions in Germany
The German Federal and State authorities announced an extension of the additional pandemic restrictions effective Tuesday January 5, 2021, including the closure of schools, daycare centers, and retail stores with limited exceptions. Please follow local media in your area for updates. The German government provides a useful English-language FAQ covering the current public health and travel restrictions. The Robert Koch Institute provides information on COVID-19 in English and German.
The U.S. Embassy in Berlin and Consulates in Munich and Frankfurt have suspended all routine appointments for passports, Consular Reports of Birth Abroad, visa, and notarial services from January 5, 2021 through January 31, 2021. This includes mail-in passport renewals. If you have an immediate need to travel and have a confirmed flight to the United States, or other urgent need for a passport, please contact the Embassy or your local Consulate and request an emergency passport appointment.
If you have previously applied for a passport or citizenship service in person or by mail, expect significant delays receiving your passport and your citizenship evidence documents. Please do not submit your passport for routine renewal at this time.
