Learn, exchange, grow, and serve. The U.S. Department of State offers many programs for non-U.S. citizens wishing to come to the U.S. for cultural, educational, or professional exchange. These programs are augmented by local opportunities in countries around that world that allow non-U.S. citizens to explore U.S. culture and the English language.
The United States supports international education and welcomes foreign students and exchange visitors. Before applying for a visa, students and exchange visitors must be accepted by their schools or program sponsors.
American English is a resource center for teaching and learning about American English.
TeachAboutUS is an intercultural online learning platform for use in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and science classrooms in Germany. It is the product of an ongoing, multi-year partnership among the U.S. Embassy in Berlin, Leuphana University Lüneburg, and the LIFE non-profit organization with support from our U.S.-based partner, the Transatlantic Outreach Program (TOP) in Washington D.C. Local partners include the Friedrich Ebert Foundation Berlin, the Berlin Senate Department for Education, Youth, and Research; the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK); and the North Rhine-Westphalia Ministry for Schools and Further Education.

The U.S. Embassy in Berlin and Consulates in Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Leipzig, and Munich sponsor a variety of international exchange programs each year, in conjunction with the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA). These exchanges are designed to enhance mutual understanding between the people of the U.S. and Germany. The Department of State is committed to supporting alumni by providing resources that will help them to build upon their exchange experience.
The Exchanges Section of the Public Affairs Department at the U.S. Embassy Berlin sponsors and facilitates a wide range of educational and cultural programs, thus engaging German audiences in dialogue about the U.S. in Germany, and encouraging them to seek professional, educational, and social experiences in the U.S.
Internship Opportunities for Students
The Embassy and Consulates General accept internship applications on a rolling basis from American and German students interested in getting hands on experience working for the U.S. Mission to Germany.
