Directions from the Southeast

Bad Aibling, Chiemsee

The Big Picture: From the northbound Autobahn A8, take the Mittlerer Ring Ost exit. It will take you onto the northbound Mittlerer Ring, here called the Innsbrucker Ring. After about 1.3 miles, you’ll pass through first one tunnel and then another. After passing through the second tunnel, turn left, i.e. west, on Prinzregentenstrasse. Continue west for approximately 1.4 miles, and then exit from Prinzregentenstrasse onto westbound Von-der-Tann-Strasse. The Consulate is almost immediately on the right at the intersection of Von-der-Tann-Strasse and Königinstrasse.

Details: From the northbound autobahn A8, take the Mittlerer Ring Ost exit. (It’s at the end of the Autobahn coming from the south, so you can’t miss it.) The exit will take you onto the northbound Mittlerer Ring Ost (here it’s called Innsbrucker Ring). After approximately 1.3 miles, you will pass through first one tunnel and then, almost immediately, another. As you leave the second tunnel, get into the left lane. At the second traffic signal after leaving the tunnel, turn left, i.e., west, on Prinzregentenstrasse. (If you got into the left lane as suggested, you’ll see that you have to turn left at the intersection.) Go west on Prinzregentenstrasse. After you’ve gone about .8 of a mile, you’ll circle around the Peace Angel statue and cross the Isar River. After crossing the bridge, approximately .6 of a mile directly ahead of you you’ll see a mustard-colored building that looks like an old mansion or palace. It’s called the Prinz-Carl-Palais. Continue heading west toward the Prinz-Carl-Palais. Get into the right lane.

Approximately .2 of a mile from the Prinz-Carl-Palais, Prinzregentenstrasse dips into a tunnel that continues west under the Palais. The right lane, where you should be, exits to the right. Stay in the right lane and take the exit. The exit lane parallels the tunnel but stays above ground. On your right you’ll see a long gray building -the Haus der Kunst. Past the Haus der Kunst at the end of the exit is a traffic signal that marks the intersection with Von-der-Tann-Strasse on the Innerer Ring. At the intersection, turn right, i.e., northwest, onto Von-der-Tann-Strasse. (This is really more a veer than a turn; the street curves back to the west immediately.) Fifty yards to the west of the intersection, at the corner of Von-der-Tann-Strasse and Königinstrasse, is another signal. Look to the northwest from the intersection, and you’ll see the Consulate (a big rectangular building and an American flag on a flagpole).

Parking: Unfortunately, because of the median strip you cannot turn left from Von- der-Tann-Strasse onto Königinstrasse. Nor may you park on eastbound Von-der- Tann-Strasse. What you can do, however — now that you know where you’re going — is try to find parking in the area and then walk back to the Consulate.
Best bets — the parking lot behind the Haus der Kunst (the long gray building about 100 yards almost directly in front of you as you pass the intersection of Königinstrasse and Von-der-Tann-Strasse) on Prinzregentenstrasse to the east of the Consulate; the Lehel neighborhood south of Prinzregentenstrasse to the east of the Consulate; or, if you can get turned around, on Von-der-Tann-Strasse west of the Consulate or on Königinstrasse itself.
