Health Alert: U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Germany, April 23, 2020

Health Alert: U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Germany, April 23, 2020

Location: Germany

Event: Message to U.S. citizens regarding COVID-19

Please share this message with other U.S. citizens currently in Germany.

Several German states have eased social distancing restrictions to allow some schools and small shops to reopen.  To maintain hygiene standards with these eased restrictions, many German states now recommend or require face coverings to be worn in shops or on public transportation.  Please check your own state government’s website (Staatskanzlei) or the Federal Ministry of Interior for the most up-to-date information on these developments in your area.

Rules for crossing borders into Germany also continue to evolve.  The German Federal Police established a toll-free phone line to answer questions related to borders (0800 6 888 000).  If you have an urgent issue related to a border crossing, please take advantage of this excellent and direct communication line.

The U.S. Embassy in Berlin and consulates in Germany have suspended all routine appointments for passports, Consular Reports of Birth Abroad, and notarial services. If you need an emergency passport for immediate international travel or for reasons relating to immigration, please contact the embassy or consulate nearest you and request an emergency passport appointment.  The application process and fee are the same as if you were applying for a regular passport.  If you previously applied for a regular passport or citizenship document, please contact the embassy or consulate nearest you to receive a status update.

Given the ongoing situation, we do not have an estimate for when regular passport operations will resume.  Visit our website for the latest information about COVID-19.
