In honor of World Refugee Day, Chargé d’Affaires Kent Logsdon presented McDonald’s Germany with the 2016 Secretary of State’s Award for Corporate Excellence for their inclusive hiring practices. McDonald’s Deutschland was selected for this prestigious award in recognition of its employment of 900 refugees at locations across the country where they get practice speaking German and earn a living, becoming contributing members of society. The Chargé spoke with refugees currently employed by McDonald’s at Berlin’s Zoo station about their opportunities in Germany and their future aspirations. The employees expressed particularly their gratitude for the opportunities presented by McDonald’s not only in providing stability for themselves and families, but in assisting with their integration into German society. The event highlighted the German and U.S. efforts to assist refugees, highlighted best practices in welcoming and incorporating immigrants and other newcomers into our societies, and drew attention to the ways that companies like McDonald’s quietly promote American values in the way they conduct business.
