Please make sure that you submit a cover letter in English that addresses the qualifications required and explains in detail how your experience, education or special training relates to those of the advertised position.
To apply for positions in U.S. Mission Germany applicants must electronically submit the documents listed in the vacancy announcement to be considered for employment. Failure to do so may result in a determination that the applicant is not eligible and/or qualified.

Please note that we cannot accept general applications, e.g. applications for positions that are currently not being advertised.
Things you need to think about before applying for positions with Mission Germany:
1. Do you have a valid residence/work permit for Germany?
Please note that you are not eligible for employment with the U.S. Mission to Germany if you do not hold a valid unrestricted residence/work permit for Germany. Please only proceed with your application if you hold a valid unrestricted residence/work permit. A copy of the unrestricted work and residence permit or Aufenthaltstitel must be attached with the application
2. Note for Eligible Family Members:
If you are an eligible family member (EFM), you do not need a work permit and are eligible to apply for all Mission Germany local positions. An EFM is a family member at least age 18 listed on the travel orders of a Foreign or Civil Service or uniformed service member permanently assigned to or stationed at a U.S. Foreign Service post or establishment abroad with a U.S. government agency that is under Chief of Mission authority (not under the Status of Forces Agreement). A copy of the travel orders must be handed in with the application.
3. Note for U.S. Citizen and Resident Alien Males:
To be eligible for a job in the Executive Branch of the Federal Government men must be in compliance with the Military Selective Service Act as amended. This applies to U.S. citizen and resident alien males born after December 31, 1959. Therefore, social security account number and date of birth must be included in the application.
4. EFM claiming U.S. Veterans Hiring Preference:
Every EFM applicant who claims U.S. Veterans’ Hiring Preference must submit a copy of his/her most recent Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty (DD-214) with all other required application materials. Failure to provide a copy of your DD-214 to Mission HR by the closing date of the Vacancy Announcement means you lose eligibility for the hiring preference.
5. Ordinary Resident (OR) claiming U.S. Veterans Hiring Preference:
In keeping with the QDDR (Quadrennial Diplomacy and Development Review) directive to expand and enhance employment opportunities for eligible family members hired abroad, HR/OE has ammended the hiring preference for all positions advertised in the mission effective April 1, 2016, as follows:
1) AEFM/USEFM who is also a preference-eligible U.S. Veteran
2) AEFM/USEFM who is not a preference-eligible U.S. Veteran
3) FS on Leave Without Pay
As per 16 STATE 23096 – Effective April 1, 2016, OR U.S. Veterans will no longer receive a hiring preference for positions advertised in the mission. OR U.S. Veterans are encouraged to apply for positions in the mission for which they are eligible and qualified.
OR U.S. Veterans who are currently employed in the mission may remain employed; however, as stated above, effective April 1, 2016, they will no longer receive a hiring preference when competing for internal vacancies.
