The American Consulate General in Frankfurt is seeking an individual for the position of Radio Field Engineer in the Regional Information Management Center (RIMC). Filling of the position is subject to availability of funds.

Supervisory Position: No

The incumbent provides radio planning, design, installation, and follow-on maintenance for over 180 posts in four geographical regions – Europe, Near East Asia, South Central Asia, and Africa. The equipment that is worked on ranges in complexity from small single repeater radio systems to major conventional, linked, multiple repeater systems at a large Embassy or Consulate. While in travel status, the incumbent will train locally employed radio technicians while installing, troubleshooting, and repairing post radio systems from multiple vendors. When supporting VIP visits, the incumbent coordinates with post radio technicians, IRM personnel, and management. The Radio Field Engineer is directly supervised by the RIMC EUR/NEA/SCA/AF Radio Branch Chief.

EDUCATION: The successful completion of Secondary School plus two years of technical electronics or radio training with one or more training certificates in radio systems (Motorola, Kenwood, Tait, MICOM, Telex, etc.) are required.

EXPERIENCE: A minimum of three years of experience in technical radio field support are required.

LANGUAGE: Level IV (fluent) (speaking/reading/writing) English is required.


  • Competency in the use of electronic and radio frequency (RF) test equipment, wave propagation, antenna theory, UPS systems, radio network planning, radio programming and alignment, RF and electrical safety is required. 


  • Mechanical, electrical, and electronic troubleshooting skills are required.
  • Ability to communicate in both oral and written formats with RIMC and Post personnel on all matters pertaining to Post radio systems, to include supporting equipment is required.
  • A German class B driver’s license is required (A copy of the driver’s license must be attached to the application).
  • Basic computer skills to utilize laptop computer based radio test equipment and planning software are required (this may be tested).
  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs/23kg is required.

*IMPORTANT: Applicants who claim status as a preference-eligible U.S. Veteran must submit a copy of the most recent DD-214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, equivalent documentation, or certification.  A “certification” is any written documentation from the armed forces that certifies the service member is expected to be discharged or released from active duty service in the armed forces under honorable conditions within 120 days after the certification is submitted by the applicant. The certification letter must be on letterhead of the appropriate ,military branch of service and contain (1) the military service dates including the expected discharge or release date: and (2) the character of service.  Acceptable documentation must be submitted in order for the preference to be given. If the written documentation confirming eligibility is not received in the HR office by the closing date of the vacancy announcement, the U.S. Veterans’ preference will not be considered in the application process. Mission HR’s decision on eligibility for U.S. Veterans’ preference after reviewing all required documentation is final.

** This level of preference applies to all Foreign Service employees on LWOP and CS with re-employment rights back to their agency or bureau.

  • Additional Selection Criteria:
  1. The U.S. Mission will consider the following when determining successful candidacy: nepotism, conflicts of interest, budget, and residency status.
  2. Locally Employed Staff (LE Staff) of the U.S. Mission Germany having served less than 12 months in their current position are not eligible to apply.
  3. Current Locally Employed Staff (LE Staff) with an overall summary rating of ‘Needs Improvement’ or ‘Unsatisfactory’ on their most recent Employee Performance Report are not eligible to apply.
  4. Current NOR employees hired on a Family Member Appointment (FMA) or a Personal Service Agreement (PSA) are not eligible to apply within the first ninety (90) calendar days of their employment, unless they have a When Actually Employed (WAE) work schedule.
