Secretary Kerry in Berlin for talks with FM Steinmeier

During his visit to Berlin September 20, 2015, Secretary Kerry praised “Germany’s remarkable example to the world with respect to the Syrian refugee situation” and multilateral cooperation in achieving the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action regarding Iran’s nuclear program.  During a press conference after his meeting with Foreign Minister Frank Walter Steinmeier, Kerry reiterated the United States has provided more than $4.1 billion to the UNHCR to support Syrian refugees.  He also announced that in 2016, the United States would increase the overall number of refugees accepted to 85,000 and in 2017 to 100,000, from the current cap of 70,000.   When asked about next steps for a political resolution to the crisis in Syria, Kerry said he would meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif during the upcoming UN General Assembly in New York.
