U.S. Embassy Berlin informs U.S. citizens that a demonstration march led by the extreme right-wing NPD (Nationaldemokratische Partei Deutschlands) against the “Kreuzberg situation” is expected to take place in Berlin on Saturday, April 26, between 12:00 noon and midnight. Approximately 100 demonstrators are expected, along with numerous counter-protestors.
Although the exact route has not yet been released to the public, the demonstration march (and possible counter-protests) will occur in the Kreuzberg district and the southern part of the Mitte district of Berlin. Because of the theme of this protest, it is likely that large numbers of counter-protesters will gather along the route. During past protests of this type in Berlin, violence has resulted from clashes between the two sides.
Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. You should avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.
