Statement by U.S. Ambassador Richard Grenell
on the Death of President George H. W. Bush
George Herbert Walker Bush, 41st President of the United States, died last night at the age of 94. His integrity, wit and positive outlook will always challenge me and the millions of people around the world to follow the example of a man we admire for his service to his country.
President Bush presided over the fall of the Berlin Wall, the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union. His service to his country spans decades across many U.S. agencies and institutions.
His beloved wife and American icon Barbara is surely pleased to welcome him home and to his final resting place.
My prayers are with the entire Bush family today.
I worked for President Bush in my first full time political job and watched up close his grace in defeat during his 1992 re-election campaign. He inspired us, though disappointed with the outcome, to commit to helping his successor unite the country after a bitter election. He was selfless and gracious in defeat and it was a powerful lesson for a young staffer like me.
One of the many powerful quotes of President Bush is my favorite: “We know what works. Freedom works. We know what’s right. Freedom is right.”
Rest In Peace, President Bush.
