Press Release: U.S.-German Futures Forum 2023: U.S. Department of State Announces Partnership with AICGS

November 8, 2022

The U.S. Department of State will partner with the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies at Johns Hopkins University (AICGS) for the U.S.-German Futures Forum. The inaugural Futures Forum took place in Münster, Germany, on November 2-3 on the topic of “The Future of Democracy in a Digital World,” hosted by the German Federal Foreign Office and Bertelsmann Stiftung.  This innovative forum brings together key decision makers from the public and private sectors along with experts and emerging leaders to address crucial global challenges and recommend shared solutions. The 2022 Futures Forum brought together American and German experts and next generation leaders from civil society, academia, the private sector, and government to address the interplay of democracy and technology.  Participants discussed strengthening the digital delivery of government services in both countries; advancing democracy and respect for human rights online; countering digital authoritarianism; and improving the use of technology in the provision of development assistance globally.  On Day Two of the Futures Forum, Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken and German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock participated in a moderated conversation with journalist Ingo Zamperoni.  The second annual Futures Forum will take place in the United States in 2023. The American Institute for Contemporary German Studies (AICGS) is a nonprofit, non-partisan policy research center affiliated with Johns Hopkins University and dedicated to deepening understanding of the challenges facing Germany and the United States in a broader global arena.
