The American Consulate General in Munich is seeking an individual for the position of Visa Assistant in the Consular section. Filling of the position is subject to availability of funds.

 

 

BASIC FUNCTION OF POSITION

The incumbent is a visa assistant in the Munich Nonimmigrant Visa (NIV) Unit, under the direct supervision of the Supervisory Visa Assistant. S/he provides the full-range of support functions related to the acceptance, processing, review and issuance of visas at a post with a high demand for such services and with a large third country applicant pool. The job holder also participates in consular outreach activities.

 

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

 

All applicants must address each selection criterion detailed below with specific information supporting each item.

 

EDUCATION: Successful completion of secondary school (Germany: Realschule, USA: American High School Diploma or GED, for all other: 10 years of schooling) is required.

 

EXPERIENCE: Two years of experience in a customer service oriented work environment in which the application of regulatory materials is required.

 

LANGUAGE: English Level IV (fluent) and German Level IV (fluent) language skills are required. (speak/write and read)

 

SKILLS, ABILITIES:

  • Possess tact, sensitivity and a solid sense of the public relations component of the position is required.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in German and English are required.
  • Level II Typing (40wpm) is required.
  • Advanced working knowledge of both the Microsoft Office Suite and the Non-immigrant Visa (NIV) system. 

 

KNOWLEDGE

  • Professional knowledge of the regulations, laws, and procedures relating to the entire range of nonimmigrant visa services, to include the Chapter 9 of the Foreign Affairs Manual, the Immigration and Nationality Act and State Department Policy is required.

The Human Resources Office will conduct standard language assessment tests and may test for other required skills as part of the selection process. Testing is conducted equitably and is administered in the same way to all applicants for the particular recruitment.

  • Additional Selection Criteria:
  1. The U.S. Mission will consider the following when determining successful candidacy: nepotism, conflicts of interest, budget, and residency status.
  2. Locally Employed Staff (LE Staff) of the U.S. Mission Germany having served less than 12 months in their current position are not eligible to apply.
  3. Current Locally Employed Staff (LE Staff) with an overall summary rating of ‘Needs Improvement’ or ‘Unsatisfactory’ on their most recent Employee Performance Report are not eligible to apply.
  4. Current NOR employees hired on a Family Member Appointment (FMA) or a Personal Service Agreement (PSA) are not eligible to apply within the first ninety (90) calendar days of their employment, unless they have a When Actually Employed (WAE) work schedule.
