The U.S. Consulate General in Düsseldorf is seeking a Volunteer Foreign National Student Intern for the Political/Economic Section.
BASIC FUNCTION OF POSITION
The purpose of this internship is to offer students the opportunity to work in U.S Consulate General’s Political/Economic Section for up to three months (90 days). A summary of assigned projects and/or duties include: Monitor current developments and report on events and topics of interest in North Rhine-Westphalia. Assist in maintaining files and collecting important news articles for subject files. Accompany Political/Economic Officer, Political/Economic specialist and Consul General to relevant events, appointments, and calls around the district as appropriate. Support and help organize consulate functions. Assist in the organization of and participate in Ambassadorial and other VIP visits; assist with the organization of Public Affairs programs (draft welcome remarks, research and compile relevant background and briefing materials for programs, conduct research for speeches and reports).
All applicants must address each selection criterion detailed below with specific information supporting each item.
EDUCATION: Present enrollment in a German university in the area of: economics, business, political science, political economy, history, public policy, international relations, or international law.
EXPERIENCE: No experience required, however, public sector and customer service experience is a plus.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:
- Strong and concise English and German drafting skills and ability to translate from German to English and vice versa required.
- A thorough knowledge of Germany’s (and particularly North Rhine-Westphalia) political, economic, and social structure is desired.
- Must have strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Word processing skills are required.
Please note that the Human Resources Office may conduct tests of appropriate language levels, or other required skills during the interview.
- Eligibility Requirements: The U.S. Mission in Germany will only accept applications from non-U.S. citizen students for this internship program. The purpose of the Volunteer National Student Intern Program is to offer students enrolled in a German university/higher institute of learning the challenge of working in a foreign affairs field. - Application language is English. Certificates, awards or degrees in English or German do not need to be translated.
- Applicants must submit a complete application (cover letter, resume, and proof of enrollment in an educational institution).
- The U.S. Mission in Germany does not refund travel expenses incurred by the interviewee.
- The internship is a voluntary service. There are no benefits attached to this internship and no compensation, nor any future employment rights.
- Students selected must pass a background check and receive a clearance from the Embassy before commencement of the internship. The security check can take up to three months and may require a personal interview with the security department of the Embassy.
